training and events

WordPress training – 1st October

There are just a couple of places left on the WordPress session VANEL is running on Friday 1st October.  This is a repeat of the very successful session we ran back in August (here).

The session is free and open to any IT supporters of third sector organisations in North East Lincolnshire.  However, there are very limited places so sign up soon!

The session is a full morning learning WordPress in depth – enough for you to get started on building a first WordPress website for your organisation.  We’ll then carry on through the afternoon to actually get real, live websites built there and then for those keen to get a website up and running asap.

9.30am start – approx 1pm, lunch, then 2pm- 4.30pm handson session.

To book call Karl Elliott or Vicky Hardy at VANEL on 01472 231123 or email karl@vanel.org.uk.

Not come across WordPress before?

Wordpress is a blogging tool (quick guide to blogs here).  It’s free.  It can do a lot more than just blogging – whole sites can be built around it.

You can get a free blog/site in seconds hosted by WordPress, or you can download the tool (for free) and host it yourself for complete control.

Most of the VANEL Third Sector Hub websites are built in WordPress – have a look:

Windows 7

Glen Greenwood (gsc21 & Virtual Riders) ran a short workshop at our “IT Matters” event on 21st Sept to show us around the new features of Windows 7. Thanks!

We learnt that Windows 7 is all about Productivity!  It’s also all about stability.  It looks pretty but works!

Windows XP Mode is there to allow you access to a Windows XP Virtual Machine.  You can install older software here (such as your Sage accounts package or old printer drivers) in XP and access them from 7.

Migrating to Windows 7 is easier & generally supportability for IT administrators is going to be simpler.  Sounds good.  We learnt about Laplinks “Moving Van” tool for upgrading to Windows 7 (see here) – no doubt we’ll review this & share more about this tool in time.

We learnt about new features such as “aero glass”, “jump list”, “snap”, “shake”, search facilities, disability access, “sticky notes”, “snipping tool”, the newly bundled IE8 and so forth.   Lots more to learn about these on Microsofts website.

We saw the improved software installation troubleshooting and also learned how Windows 7 will run on pretty much any machine (but of course needs appropriate resources to make the most of its power).

More information soo, but please feel free to share your own experiences of Windows 7 in your comments or in the discussion boards (we’ve got a new one dedicated to Windows 7 here).

We’ll be running further sessions soon on Windows 7 so let us know if you are interested & we’ll keep you posted.

Networking Events for our members

Thanks to everyone who attended our “IT Matters” networking & training event at GNC today (21st Sept).  Lots of useful things shared and learnt.

We’ll be aiming tohold these face-to-face events quarterly from now on, so watch this space for dates for December, March 2011 and onwards.

Between meetings we’ll be holding many other IT support activities and of course this website is available 24/7 for your reference and contributions.

Follow up information from the event on the 21st Sept will be online soon.

IT Matters event 21st Sept

The next major meeting for the IT Supporters Network will be on Tuesday 21st September 2010.

The “IT Matters” event will take place at Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre in Grimsby.

Open to existing members of the network and to all those others who have an interest in IT, the event is free and should provide some useful support & networking opportunities.

Download the flyer here and the more detailed agenda here.

Give either Vicky or myself a call on 01472 231123 if you would like to book.

Social Media

Social media tools are widespread, easy to access, often free and potentially empowering for Third Sector Organisations.

Tools such as blogs, facebook, twitter, podcasting and others are a new resource, but not often well understood by organisations in the third sector.

There is an opportunity for some free training in Social Media tools on 29th July in Grimsby.

All the information about the event on the 29th July is here, and this is part of a nationwide series of such events.  Find out more here: www.socialmediasurgery.com

We have a “Social Media” group on this website, so feel free to join in the discussion here.

Free IT Training

We still have some final opportunities for free IT training for staff or volunteers connected to third sector organisations in North East Lincolnshire.  These will be the last opportunities (up to end of July 2010), after which courses will still be available but there will be a cost.

So contact us now (Karl, karl@vanel.org.uk or Vicky, vicky@vanel.org.uk) at VANEL (01472 231123) to reserve a place.

Full diary of upcoming dates here.

20th July am – beginners IT training (free)
20th July pm – advanced IT training (free)

27th July am – Excel training (free) [ full ]
27th July pm – Excel training (free) [ places still available ]

More information about training opportunities soon.
