All new website

This website has seen little change for a while now. The Third Sector Hub at VANEL became the Development Hub and our various support initiatives have continued. But the website for the Hub itself has been left alone for the past six months.

So today the website is reborn. Simpler, cleaner, more up to date.

Governments’ Giving Green Paper

On 29 December 2010, the Coalition issued the “Giving Green Paper”.

” The Giving Green Paper sets out the Government’s initial ideas for building a stronger culture of giving time and money to start a national debate on our society’s attitude to giving. This is not a conventional green paper. We want it to embody a collective approach to building culture change so it is written from a variety of perspectives. In addition to our own proposals and announcements, we have highlighted many ideas from outside of government. Taken together, the ideas and examples in this paper highlight the huge amount of innovative and creative activity going on across the country to stimulate social action. ”

What’s it about?

A briefing to help you understand public law and how to use it to protect your organisation and its funding. The next one is 10 December 2010.

Ever worried about funding cuts?
Ever felt that a decision is unfair?

Voluntary and community groups work with public bodies all the time – whether local councils, health authorities, the Big Lottery or government departments. Why does it feel like they always have the power?

This session is a brief introduction to the key principles of Public Law and ways you can address wrongs. With case studies and practical tips it could be the most useful session you attend this year. Come along and find out that public bodies don’t have the power – you do.

The session will cover the key principles and how to spot
• Illegality
• Unfairness
• Irrationality
• Maladministration

By the end of the session you will have ideas of what remedies are open to you and how to go about getting a fair decision!

Update from the Volunteer Managers Network

A number of Volunteer Managers and Coordinators met on 16 November at a forum to discuss issues and solutions around supporting volunteering. Thanks to all involved, hopefully we all learnt something from the session.

The session is repeated on 16 December so come along if you manage or coordinate volunteers in your organisation.

In the New Year we’ll be starting to run a programme of training sessions for Volunteer Mangers, so keep an eye on this space.

We’d like to invite you to formally join a Network to help us communicate with and coordinate support for Volunteer Managers locally. It’s free – we just need your contact details so we know who’s involved.

We ran a successful “Volunteering Improvement Workshop” in November and originally scheduled a repeat of it on 2 Dec. Due to the weather the 2 Dec event was cancelled but has now been rescheduled for the 16 Dec instead. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The event is open to anyone who manages or is responsible for volunteers.

“Snow stopped play”. Unfortunately the last week has been marked by show, ice and disruptions. We had to cancel a number of events last week and those cancellations are still affecting our schedules. Please keep an eye on the websites or give VANEL a call on 01472 231123 if you need an update.

The Volunteer Managers Network is new and one of our meetings was cancelled from the 2 Dec, but has now been rescheduled for the 16th. Details here. Find out more about the Network here.

We’ve updated our IT support offerings and just published our December IT newsletter. Download it here. Not involved with the Network yet? It’s free for IT supporters so find out more here.

The TSF Rgeneration Working Group was also cancelled earlier this week, but please keep an eye on the website here for latest news. Importantly the Transition Fund has just been announced, so please check if you’re eligible and get your applications in. Event in Leeds on 14 Dec may tell you even more.

We’ve also had to cancel our Public Law briefing for the 10th, but our IT surgery in the morning of the 10th is still due to go ahead.

The website for the Trustee Network has been updated this week too, so keep up to date with new resources on there too.

It’s more than a week since my last weeknotes. So this update on development work from the Hub covers a total of 2 weeks up to 26^th November.

Surveys show that around 40% of volunteer managers and coordinators receive no training for that role. VANEL held a forum for Volunteer Managers and coordinators in November to help discuss this issue and to find out what training and support is needed and can be offered by VANEL to managers. We’re helping the Volunteer Centre put a training programme together now, and we’re repeating the discussion forum on 2December if you’d like to get involved.

The Hub attended a breakfast session tackling Apprenticeships held as part of the 100 days campaign from GiFHE and the Telegraph. It was a packed event with updates on the campaign and the value of apprenticeships, as well as a reminder of the economic potential of wind energy developments off the coast at Grimsby. Third Sector employers should be keeping an eye on the apprenticeship agenda and also seeing whether they should sign up to offer apprenticeship places themselves. We’ll be discussing this topic at the next meeting of the Third Sector Regeneration Partnership on 7 December if you’d like to find out more.

Only one training course these last couple of weeks – “Effective Grant Applications” training, run through the Fundraising Plus project, was full and well received. Keep an eye on our training pages for dates of the next sessions.

The Compact Steering Group met last week and a number of updates will be appearing on the Compact website over the next few days. Our local Compact is still strong and in place and is now due to be refreshed following a national refresh. Keep an eye on the website for news and updates.

External happenings: CERT hosted a training day on Public Law delivered through the Empowering the Voluntary Sector project. We continue to run free, monthly Public Law briefings for anyone who wants to find out more about the topic. Our next is 10 December. Contact us to find out more.

The Change Board also met last week and will meet again in December. The Change website is updated regularly now and the Hub also shares information as often as possible on the website for the Third Sector Regeneration partnership. Karl Elliott (Hub Manager at VANEL) now sits on the Change Board representing the Voluntary and Community Sector. Contact Karl if you have anything you’d like to discuss or put to the Change Board.

We’ve also been simplifying and reworking some of our support websites. You’ll start to notice changes on the Hub, VANEL Members News, Trustee Network and Leaders Network websites very soon. We’re working on making our initiatives and websites leaner and more effective to navigate. Bear with us but also please feel free to send us feedback!

New training and support sessions from the IT Network in place this week. Keep an eye on the Hub training pages and the IT Supporters Network website for information. Proving the value of technology at the moment by continuing to work despite snowy weather making travel difficult!
