The Third Sector Hub ran a very successful training programme during 2009 and this year we’ve added many new courses to our programme. The training programme is still very focused on developing skills and knowledge within our local Third Sector Organisations that will help in survival and long term sustainability for those organisations. But we’re increasingly adding in courses aimed at individuals – both staff and volunteers.

What’s New?

Our Thrive Trustee Network will now include support for committee members of voluntary and community groups which are not charities and therefore not legally ‘Trustees’. Meetings will now be expanded to be held every month, alternating the focus between charity/trustee matters and general governance development open to all.

Funding Central is a new, national online resource providing information about grants and funding in a similar vein to the GrantNet service the Hub is currently providing. Helen Howard, our Funding Advice Development Worker will be running short, free briefings and workshops to help you understand how to make best use of the Funding Central tool.

Helen will also be starting a number of “Fundraising Basics” evening sessions from February. These are exactly that – the basic issues and principles around fundraising techniques. Will be of interest to any groups interested in raising cash through traditional routes.

The Thrive Trustee Network is an initiative from the Third Sector Hub to support and develop volunteer Trustees, committee members, their boards, committees and organisations. An overview of the Network is here, with more information on the separate website www.thrivetrustees.org.uk.

5pm-6.30pm at Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre, Grimsby
Free session to those committing to joining the free Leaders Network.
The Thrive Leaders Network is an initiative from the Third Sector Hub to help Third Sector leaders support and develop each other for the long term sustainability of their organisations and the sector.

The Third Sector Hub promotes understanding of Public Law and this short session covers the basics so you can see if your organisation would benefit from advice, support or further training.

9.30am-4pm at Melbourne House, Grimsby

This is the last of our full-day communication and media training sessions. Communicating what your group does is absolutely critical for future success. Learn how to put your message together on paper, online, on the radio or on video. Delivered in conjunction with CPO Media.

KnowHowNonProfit.org

It brings together a wide range of information, resources and best practices related to many aspects of managing or running Third Sector Organisations.

A very competent website with considerable financial backing (£2m+) means that there should be value here for anyone trying to find answers to their questions or trying to learn from others. Think of it as a Business Link Information portal for the Third Sector.

A very important aspect is the interactivity. There are blogs, forums and other web 2.0 technologies employeed to get people comunicating and interacting – both with the website team and with each other.

So KnowHowNonProfit is an excellent starting point if you need answers.

Don’t forget that locally the Third Sector Hub tries to supply answers and bring people together too. The Third Sector Hub website at www.thirdsectorhub.org.uk does not aim to act as an information service – sites like KnowHowNonProfit do this well. But we do try to supply locally relevant support and information, so try the website or contact us.

the SCMS website

If your organisation is not already registered then it is free to register yourself, after which you will be able to access current and future contract information and download and submit bids automatically.

In many cases the SCMS system is the only method of obtaining information about a PQQ or tender and may be the only way to submit your bid.

North East Lincolnshire Council has used SCMS for the recent Change Programme (Economic Wellbeing) initiative, so being included in the system is important for TSOs who wish to be involved with similar opportunities.

Support with SCMS

It is free to register on SCMS, but support has also been previously offered through CERT’s “Doing Business with the VCS” project. This support may or may not be available as you read this, so contact CERT direct at www.cert-ltd.co.uk.
